S4E15 - Dave, 49. Derby, KS

Dave’s sexual orientation came into focus early on while growing up in small-town, suburban Kansas in the late eighties, but the only place he could meet other queer people was cruising bathrooms and public parks in near-by Wichita. An assault and HIV scare inspired him to come out in college and, eventually, to his family.

Since then, he’s lived in Dallas, New York City, Los Angeles and Seattle and, along the way, has made some discoveries about how his preferences for negotiating love, sex and friendship have diverged from conventional ideas about relationships. It’s only in the last few years that he’s figured out what he wants and how he wants to live as a gay man.

S4E14 - Steven M., 50. Tucson, AZ

Steven grew up in his “shit-kicking” town of Tucson, AZ and even though it was liberal compared to the rest of the state, he was still a target for bullies because of his lisp and his habit of staring at other guys in the locker room. But summer adventures with his Dad in Ojai, CA taught him that a wondrous queer world waited for him outside of Tucson.

Since recording his original Fruitbowl interview in 2019, Steven has gone through some major life events that he talks about in a follow-up conversation with the editor for this episode, Bayley Boecker.

S4E13 - Lizzie, 29. Seattle

Lizzie grew up in super-liberal Seattle with super-cool, neo-hippie parents who had lots of queer friends and didn’t bat an eye when Lizzie let them know that she was … not straight. Lizzie took the lead when it came to her first time with a guy and you’ll enjoy hearing about her other adventures with a girl from her gym, an Irish bartender and a French Canadian who swept her off her feet - enough for her to risk being detained by Canadian police at the border. When she was young, Lizzie also had a very special relationship with a water jet at her swimming pool.

After that, we are proud to present a listener submission from James who describes a summary of his journey as a bisexual and the arrangement he has with his current wife to finally explore his queer identity without shame.

S4E8 - Debra, 71. Palo Alto

In this Getting Fresh episode, Dave welcomes his in-studio guests: the creators of the Seattle-based Gayish podcast, Kyle and Mike and asks them about their podcast’s origin and its unique format: unpacking gay stereotypes one episode at a time. Then we listen to a listener-submitted story that describes the writer’s first time at an orgy and we discuss our own orgy adventures and our different experiences and expectations when it comes to group sex.

S3E15 - Karilla, 28. Portland

Karilla’s story, in so many ways, reflects the common stages of personal growth that so many queer people go through: in our early years, insecurity about our sexuality and adults who fail to help guide us; during high school, sitting on the sidelines and watching as our friends perform all the typical hetero coming of age rituals; in college, painful memories about first love and the lessons we learn from heartbreak; and choosing our family and finally accepting and loving ourselves. And did I mention that she’s had some really fun hookups?

In my introduction to this episode, I talk a little bit about my efforts to interview more female-identified people. It’s my hope that, over time, as the FRUITBOWL episode archive grows, more cis women will hear episodes like Karilla’s and trust me with their stories. In fact, I’m determined to collect at least 20 interviews with female-identified interviewees before I even think of starting to edit the larger FRUITBOWL feature or TV series. So if you or someone you know is femme identified and interested in sharing, please reach out to me via the contact portal on the https://www.fruitbowlpodcast.com/contact.

FRUITBOWL is produced independently without financial sponsors, advertising revenue or corporate media support. Every interview is recorded in-person, on location in each interviewee’s home and production expenses including travel, accommodations, equipment rental, editing and post-production are paid for out of pocket by Dave Quantic, FRUITBOWL’s creator.

The only consistent financial support (currently $137/month) comes from FRUITBOWL’s 24 Patreon members. Help support FRUITBOWL’s mission of documenting and sharing stories about queer coming of age by becoming a patron! A minimum $5 monthly donation allows patrons early access to episodes, behind the scenes updates and exclusive video content that is not available to the general public. If we hit $375/month I can start to train an assistant editor to help me produce the episodes. Learn more about how to become a patron at: https://www.patreon.com/fruitbowlpodcast

S3E11 - Elliott, 27. Portland

Elliott was raised in Caspar, Wyoming and has packed a lot of living in their 27 years including their own coming out, marriage, divorce, navigating their gender journey as well as figuring out their relationship to their faith, kink and the apps. Elliott also has a lot to say about the act of "squirting" and how to achieve it with a willing partner and also best practices for negotiating intimacy with cis men who might not be experienced with sex with trans people. We also decided that Elliott's very specific best move should be called "The Unicorn."
